I decided to attempt to rehabilitate Spooky through the Natural Lifemanship techniques that I use for emotional balancing traumatized horses.
Contrary to my request the owner isolated him from the other horses, leaving him alone in a small paddock. He was in a panic state from the beginning. My first goal was to get him to take his attention off the barn and food to look at me. After about 20 minutes he looked at me. There was a noticeable calming effect caused from dopamine release. But the decision to look at me caused him distress. I was eventually able to enter his space and pet him, but he only tolerated it. I backed away and he sped off immediately.
My initial assessment is that Spooky has been traumatized as a foal which inhibited his relationship with his owners that locked him into a fight or flight state. My next goal is to build trust and invite him into my space. I plan to see him again tomorrow.
